About this listen

Albert Payson Terhune's story of Bruce, the collie, who starts out life as an ugly, ungainly type and grows up not only beautiful, but incredibly smart. Bruce protects The Mistress from evildoers and becomes a decorated war hero (WWI) before returning to The Home Place for a leisurely retirement amid the lovely trees and lakes.

Bruce's story is told from the dog's perspective as well as the Master’s. We join in the adventures as well as share in a few sorrows. One of Terhune’s best that will bring a smile as well as a tear.

great stories

I enjoyed this book even more than Lad! a collection of short stories about Bruce, a Collie. Great for most ages- not good for younger listeners due to many war stories and a few mentions of a historical type of dog torture being done during the time period. my family listened together- 12 yr old son, teenage daughters and parents. we all enjoyed this very much, we wished there were more stories in the collection.

Love at First Listen

Absolutely loved it. I can't pick between Lad or Bruce. They're both so dear to my heart as I am a helpless lover of dogs.

Bruce, A Grand Terhune Collie

Being a dog lover, and having read every Collie book by Albert Payson Terhune throughout my childhood, and again years ago as an adult, I was delighted to find Bruce on Audible ! The book can stand alone as a beautiful classic dog story and a tribute to the the courage and character of Collies the author and his wife raised and loved and appreciated for decades. He wrote about their natures, their relationships with people, and their adventures through decades, like the true story of Bruce’s time as a heroic military carrier dog in World War I, saving hundreds of soldiers by his courage, intelligence and loyalty.
The only area I had trouble with at the beginning was that the narrator was not a man because the main human, the Master, as he was called, was the dominant figure, and most of the characters and soldiers were male. The voice portrayals of the many and varied characters were awkward, but well into the book became better and more consistent.
