About this listen

The spring of A.D. 98 is a time of optimism in the province of Britannia and business is brisk at the inn run by Aurelia Marcella. Then a wagon arrives bearing a farmer with a grievous sword wound and Aurelia's twin brother, Lucius, who is a government investigator, is sent for.

When the farmer dies, the twins head for the coast to return the man to his family and to check out a nearby shipwreck. Gallic sea-raiders are suspected of stealing the wreck's valuable official cargo and of killing the farmer.

As long-buried grudges between the natives and the Roman colonists are revived, feuding escalates to outright terrorism. A subtle, personal agenda seems to be at work as well - one or more parties may have hired the Gauls to orchestrate the violence.

I didn’t realize they had hired robots to narrate already

Story wasn’t too bad, but it was really hard to tell. For the first time in listening to over 200 audiobooks, I increased the narration speed. The narrator was so slow and monotonous she made Siri sound like a vivacious chatterbox by comparison. I’ll never listen to another thing Rebecca Rogers narrates again. Totally ruined the book. I looked up her other books and was not surprised to see the majority were non-fiction. Apparently they believe non-fiction requires narration to be slow enough for verbatim transcription in longhand. If so, no wonder she has so many books under her belt.
