About this listen

With an introduction written and read by Arsène Wenger.

The long-awaited memoir from international football ambassador, former co-owner of Arsenal FC and legend of the game: David Dein.

There's no doubt that Dein has been one of the most significant and influential figures in British football for over three decades—operating at club and international level. He was a prime mover in the creation of the Premier League, hugely influential within the England set-up and, of course, was the mastermind—along with Arsène Wenger—in creating the glory days of Arsenal Football Club, leading the team for almost a quarter of a century. Connected to the most senior figures across the global game as a friend, rival, advisor, and collaborator, Dein has been central to major turning points in the game.

Calling the Shots is part memoir, part inspirational meditation on leadership, teamwork and how to invest in people. It tracks the full story of David's remarkable life and career to date, recounting never-before-told stories from the inside, intriguing characters met along the way, and discussing the past, present and future of football. An entertaining and motivational story for football and non-football fans alike, Calling the Shots is a dynamic masterclass in how to succeed in business and life.

Surprisingly Great Listen

When an author narrates their audiobook and it’s excellent, you feel like you fit the complete experience.

The book itself carefully describes the core facets of David’s life and as a Nigerian, an Arsenal and Arsene Wenger fan, I found it enjoyable.

RESPECT!

Thank you Mr. Dein. This book has given me a renewed respect for the people at Arsenal and the people in football. I regret the manner in which I have criticized the club and Arsene in the past. I’d love to say it was all because I didn’t know what was actually happening but that’s no excuse.

Arsene has given so much to me as a fan. I should have behaved better.

I share a birthday with David Dein

I just learnt that I share the same birthday with David, although I was born in 91 in Zimbabwe, years after you! Still listening and still fascinated and learning from the incredible journey that you have had.

Thank you from a fellow Gunner!

Candid humanity

I had never heard anything of the story of David Dein (My arsenal fanhood began after he had departed the club). I’m sure, the book being autobiographical, there may be some critique from other players in adjacent roles. But from where I sit, his is a remarkable story of honesty, passion, compassion, and a shared hope in humanity that transcends significant barriers in culture, tradition, sport, business, and relationship. An example of someone utilizing their role in power for things that uplift the community and wider society as a whole. Champions of all the good things don’t come around much. It seems David Dein is one of them.
