About this listen

The silent rush of footsteps, the muffled shriek, the ever-tightening noose of exotic silk…the mark of the Cat. The Cat had claimed number nine.

The Cat had nine kills, but Ellery Queen found number ten alive and offered the victim temptingly to the killer. The trap was baited, and Ellery and the police poised for the strike that had to come. But the strangler struck elsewhere - and Queen's heart chilled at the thought of what he would find.

Great Story

Although I had surmised the who and why, as of the niece's murder, I found the story well done and engrossing. Robert Fass' narration was also superb.

Nice & twisty when you think you know....you dont

It's more thought out than other books in the series as it feels more mature in some aspects And lacking in others it's complex with interesting. schrmes

aTense chase

After his last Wrightsville case 'Ten Days Wonder', Ellery Queen has sworn off amateur detecting, he will just stick to his writing career.
There is a serial strangler terrorizing Manhattan and the news papers illustration of a cat with nooses for tails, tracking the victim count, is not helping. It has become such a prolific case that Richard Queen has been appointed as the 'Top Dog in the Cat chaser squad,' of the city police and he is not happy about it. The killer doesn't seem to have a pattern. The victims are men and women, unmarried and married, loners and with active social lives. It looks like Ellery will have to come out of his self-imposed retirement from crime solving to help his father's investigation.

the ending was not what I was expecting

I didn't like jimmy very annoying and childish portrayal of a 20th century man. quite fanciful

Ellery takes on a serial killer

Queen enters into the world of the Cat, a serial killer who strangles victims with colored silk cords. Well done, but after a while it's painfully obvious who the killer is, and then you have to wait through a lot of jabber to get to the solution. Fass isn't my favorite Queen narrator, by far. He's not bad, just...eh.

Ellery Queen is always a winner.

I liked the narrator and storyline. I love surprise endings and I was certainly surprised by this ending!

Not really a mystery novel

Ellery Queen books are extremely varied because of different authors. I think this is the only one I've read that I actually disliked. 40ish pages of the cities reaction, 40ish pages of waiting and arguing, 30ish pages of wandering & travel, 40ish pages of pretty predictable mystery. There are plenty of great Ellery Queen books to read instead though.

Not his best

This story started out with what I considered to be a good plot. But as time went on, it became more of a psychological fiasco. And the ending was just bizarre. Very disappointing.
