About this listen

Another mind-bending science fiction epic from a true visionary, Centuries explores a barely recognizable future where humans control their own evolution. Genetic manipulation and artificial intelligence shape an astounding destiny for our species.

With these wondrous changes come unexpected new truths of heart and mind that challenge the very definition of human - and that threatens not only our existence, but the universe itself as our surprising powers - both miraculous and monstrous - evolve through the centuries.

A prose like fable of immense scope and depth

If you've enjoyed Attanasio's other works, please don't hesitate to pick this up. An enormously enjoyable story rife with lush backdrops and vividly imagined characters, this is a science fiction / future saga that plumbs the depths of topics such as AI, biology, quantum mechanics, politics, human future evolution and much more.

A truly fascinating read/listen considering the exponential increases in AI technology, bio-hacking, and numerous other topics explored by the author with uncanny prescience more than two decades ago. A remarkable journey.

Great Story/Not so great narration

What was one of the most memorable moments of Centuries?

I found it to be such an enjoyable ride that I was truly wary of how the story would wrap up. But the ending was well conceived and I was completely satisfied in the end.

What didn’t you like about David Gilmore’s performance?

On the plus side, you could keep the characters straight, and knew who he was at any given time. On the minus side, everybody sounded like they were whining a lot of the time. I just didn't find his performance appealing.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Beware your actions. They always have unintended results.

What's up with the narration? :*-(

Bad character voices. They do not do justice to the characters or story at all.. I love this book, it's one of my favorites.. but would rather listen to it in text to speech than this.. The characters are not well "acted" at all. I agree with the other reviewer who said it sounds like they are whining. Especially Ellen's voice is portrayed terribly as this very fake sounding high pitched female voice that never says anything in a serious way. Most everyone sounds like they're always being sarcastic and unemotional, especially her. I don't even know if there's a way to listen to this with text to speech, but I hope there is. If you're not going to get good voice acting, why have an audio book at all? A lot of this is just bad on an embarrassing level. It's unfortunate because it's an amazing story deserving of incredible acting. I made it through only four chapters before having to stop because Ellen's voice is portrayed so horrendously it makes me wince and I can't bear to listen anymore! On a plus note, I'd love to see this as a film with legendary actors! (How I personally imagine the character's voices in my mind!)
