Changing the Sheets by Deanna O’Danial - Review

About the Author: This is the second book that I have listened to written and narrated by Deanna O’Daniel. The book, so appropriately titled “Changing the Sheets,” is both captivating and timeless. Once again, her ability to recall her life in such detail is nothing less than remarkable! Her rich voice and intricate descriptions provide a refined clarity unlike any other author that I can recall - Bravo to the refined writer, author, and vocal artist!

My Takeaway: In this book, Deanna covers a period of time in the sixties, seventies, and eighties filled with social unrest. It includes gender inequality, environmental changes, war, drug usage, and much more. Specifically, I love how she shared her experiences with relationships, marriage, children, and careers. Her thought-provoking words captivate us as she attempts to find herself and her place in the world during that era. Her work ethic, strong will, and relentless pursuit of being an independently successful female in a male-dominated world will take many surprising twists and turns.
“Attention all passengers: lock your trays in the upright position and buckle your seat belts; we are expecting turbulent conditions.”

In closing, Do not miss this incredible journey with Deanna O’Danial! You may just find yourself “Changing the Sheets” too!

Women's Powerful Changing Role in Our Society

"Changing the Sheets" by Deanna O'Daniel highlights the rights for which women have fought for many years in very engaging tales. She brilliantly uses humorous antidotes from her own experiences to tell the story. She reflects on brave women that have paved the way for us, our daughters, and our granddaughters. This book will resonate deeply with many of us. It's a tribute to the strength and perseverance of previous generations of women. It's a must-read to reflect on society …where we've been and where we need to go.

Reliving my Becoming

Changing the Sheets is an autobiography written about a woman who enters married life in the 1960's perceiving herself to be powerless in her life and marriage. Her metamorphosis into an independent individual living in Louisville in the 60's and 70's is well written and unusually revealing. The backdrop of the national dramas of the times and how O'Daniel related to them is significant for a least 2 reasons. Historically, it is important to understand how we got to today. The young women of today's world probably have no understanding of how women like O'Daniel took us from what was for many women a dark age to that of today's relative liberation. Since I am about O'Daniel's age I remember what she lived through. This was about my own becoming. Listening to O'Daniel's recollection I remember the repression of thought and feeling. I remember the sadness and the anger. I remember the disempowerment, and I remember my slow and painful journey to self. We pioneers initiated the struggle that today's youth can bring to fruition.

Vulnerability

I found Deanna O’Daniels’ book, Changing the Sheets, refreshingly unpretentious. As she recalls the transitions in her relationship with her husband and how they related to the complexities of the day, I found myself transported back to the 70’s. Her depiction of the many facets of her marriage, friendships, and career, had me reevaluating my own.
