About this listen

Clambering into the branches of a tree, a young woman flees flaming arrows and massacre. She will need to struggle for survival, scour the wilderness for shelter, and strive for a new family and setting where she can belong. Her unmarked way is costly and hard.

For Charis, the world outside the window of home is a maze of hazards. And even if she survives the wilds, it is no simple matter to discover and nest among her own kind—the godly, those called Puritans by others. She may be tugged by her desires for companionship, may even stumble into an intense love for a man, and may be made to try the strength of female heroism in ways no longer familiar to women in our century.

Streams of darkness run through the 17th century villages of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Occult fears have a way of creeping into the mind. What young woman can be safe from the dangers of wilderness when its shadowy thickets spring up so easily in the soil of human hearts? Much will oppose Charis' longings for renewal and peace. She must pursue and discover the hero's path to a larger, more vivid life.

Wonderful Colonial American Adventure

Really enjoyed this story of a young lady’s colonial Massachusetts adventures. This was a book club selection that I was delighted to discover. I would highly recommend- especially for teen girls, as a summer read for high school English classes, or anyone who enjoys the likes of Ann of Green Gables or the tv series 1884.

Excellent writing and well-read!

This is a beautifully written book, such poetic and descriptive language. I truly enjoyed it- the audible reader does a great job creating a 17th century voice depiction of Charis. It would have been neat to also have some male actors for the male roles, but this was well done. A book worth listening to…and shelving!

Swept away!

I wish my words could describe just how I was taken away to this world of wonder— a book you can’t wait to keep reading but would like it to have no end! Captivating!

Towards the end, I was very touched by the blessings of trust in Divine Providence, true love, perseverance, and strength.

Transported to another time!

The historical research was so good. and the dialogue gave me such an interesting look into the Puritan culture. Such a heartwrenching story of both hard hearts and compassionate souls.
