About this listen

‘A rock ‘n’ roll memoir like no other’ Daily Mail

‘A gutsy account of tenacity and perseverance…Cher’s voice reverberates with the grit and depth that made her famous.’ The New York Times

THERE IS ONLY ONE CHER …

… and for seven decades she has been showing us why. Cher holds the attention of the world with her voice, her acting, her style, her wit and her unstoppable spirit. Now, for the first time, she tells her story in her own voice – as honest as it is hilarious, as powerful as it is perceptive.

Cher’s childhood was anything but normal. As her mother Georgia – blessed with movie-star looks and a knockout voice – moved them around the country over and again in the hope of finding fame, her school life wasn’t straightforward. But she always knew she was going to be somebody when she grew up.

Cher’s powerful instinct to keep moving eventually landed her in the arms of Sonny Bono. The duo became famous beyond their wildest dreams, from humble beginnings singing backup in Phil Spector’s studio through to pop stardom as Sonny and Cher, and then on to the television show that made them household names. But as time passed, fame changed the dynamic of their relationship and Cher evolved from a wide-eyed teenager into a woman. She started fighting for herself, breaking away from Sonny’s control – and realising that things were not as they seemed.

Taking risks, making headlines, falling in love, Cher struggled and stumbled while trying to become her own woman. Cher: The Memoir, Part One brings us to the brink of her next chapter, as she begins to chart her own path, finally claiming her rightful place in the world and becoming CHER.

"Butterfly on the Wall: Witnessing the Magic and Mayhem of Cher’s Epic Life"

A Five-Star Review of Cher: The Memoir, Part One

Thank God—or Cher (depending on which bathhouse you worship at)—that this is only Part One, because I was left craving more, more, more. This book, much like its author, is timeless, endlessly fascinating, and impossible to put down. Cher doesn’t just invite us into her world—she takes us by the hand, spins us around the dancefloor of her life, and leaves us breathless, wondering how one person could endure so much and still rise higher than ever before.

From the chaos and heartbreak of her early years—an unconventional childhood marked by poverty, uncertainty, and unshakable dreams—to the rollercoaster ride of meeting Sonny, their meteoric rise to stardom, the dizzying heights of their variety show, and the heartbreak of their very public fall, Cher tells it all with raw honesty and wit sharper than a sequined stiletto. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll ache for her as she navigates the turmoil, pain, and suffering of a life lived boldly and unapologetically.

Cher’s unbreakable spirit shines through every page. The book is filled with moments of profound vulnerability and dazzling reinvention. From her struggles to find her voice as a solo artist to her rejection by Hollywood while chasing her dream of becoming a serious actress, Cher’s story is one of grit, resilience, and relentless drive. Against all odds, she rises—time and again—transforming heartbreak into art and challenges into triumphs.

Her relationships, both romantic and platonic, are explored with equal parts glamour and poignancy. Whether it’s her deep bond with her mother, Georgia Holt, her tumultuous marriage to Sonny, or her many fabulous friendships and romances, Cher shares it all with the kind of humor, charm, and emotional depth only she could deliver. And, oh, the stories she has to Cher! From backstage antics to Hollywood glitz, this book is a treasure trove of adventures and misadventures you won’t want to miss.

What makes this memoir truly unforgettable is its campy, glamorous essence balanced with heartfelt sincerity. Cher doesn’t shy away from her flaws or failures, but instead embraces them as essential threads in the fabric of her remarkable life. Her journey is a testament to reinvention and survival, a reminder that Cher is not just a star—she’s a force of nature.

And as the final chapter closes, you’re left not just wanting but needing more. Maybe Part Two will suffice—but honestly, this deserves an anthology, an encyclopedia, or even ten more parts. Maybe she’ll do a companion book—Cher: And Other Celebrity Adventures, Misadventures, and Fabulous Real-Life Dreams. Oh, to be a butterfly on the wall (because flies are gross).

If you’re not already sold, here’s the cherry on top: the audiobook features Cher herself alongside Stephanie J. Block, the Broadway Cher Show star. Hearing these stories in Cher’s unmistakable voice is a revelation. Don’t hesitate. Don’t miss it. Buy it now.

From her conception (or pre-existence, if you believe Cher is eternal) to her rise as a pop icon, to her reinventions as a rock goddess, disco diva, Oscar-winning actress, and eternal queen of reinvention, this memoir is a dazzling, poignant, and utterly fabulous chronicle of a life unlike any other. It’s a story of pain and chaos, but also of resilience and triumph. Against all odds, Cher endures. Forever endless, forever Cher.
