About this listen

The story is inspired by the true events surrounding the 1862 Santee Sioux Indian revolt throughout Minnesota and the Dakota Territory. The story begins with Red Iron as a young boy and quickly moves to his rise among the Indian ranks and his lifetime quest for peaceful coexistence. Red Iron reaches adulthood and fathers twins; a boy, Curved Wing, and a girl, Blue Feather. The tale moves through time showing the close relationship of the brother and sister to their adulthood and the heart of the story, the year 1862. Curved Wing is now a scout for the U.S. Army where his friend and commander, Captain Gary Hillmann, has married his sister. Red Iron is now Chief Red Iron. Chief Red Iron and other Chiefs have signed a series of treaties that are not being fully honored by the U.S. Government. Questionable actions by Indian Agency Superintendents contribute to the growing unrest in the ranks of the Natives. As hunger grips the Indians, the Warriors, now turned farmers, are frustrated further as the hunting range and wild game are squeezed by the White settlements. War breaks out...
