The Christmas tree has its origins in Germany. The husband of Britain’s Queen Victoria brought the tradition to England when he moved there in 1840. But where did the German tradition come from? Many stories claim to explain this. One tradition states the medieval St Boniface used the evergreen tree to symbolize Jesus as the ‘tree of life’.

Editorial reviews

In bright and cheery tones, actress Jude Beaumont offers a short but sweet sampling of stories behind the most beloved Christmas traditions: trees, cards, and carols. This is a delightful listen that’s well-suited for young and inquiring minds who wonder why we celebrate the holiday as we do, and parents might find themselves picking up some new tidbits, too. Overall, the most surprising lesson here is just how young many of our seasonal "traditions" really are. Light seasonal music adds sparkle to the performance.

Critic reviews

"I'm learning all sorts of stuff about stuff I didn't even know I didn't know. And it sticks. In a nutshell: wonderful." (Jonathon Margolis, Financial Times)

Christmas Trees, Carols and Cards

This five minute short by iMinds is great introduction to the customs that most of us celebrate during Christmas. It is widely agreed that the tradition of the Christmas tree began in Germany and then slowly spread to other European countries. Protestant reformer, Martin Luther added lit candles to an evergreen tree in the late 1500s. Britain did not begin the custom until the 1800s, when German-born Queen Charlotte introduced a Christmas tree at a party. Christmas carols began much earlier in the 13th century. And Christmas cards got their start in England in 1843 and have spread throughout the world, growing in popularity. Fun listen!

Nice to know how customs originated

Christmas is celebrated every year with Christmas tree, greeting cards and Christmas carols. Nice to know how these present Christmas customs originated, became popular and then became the integral part of the culture. Interesting to know the history!
