About this listen

Churchill: A Life follows Winston Churchill from his earliest days to his moments of triumph. Here, the drama and excitement of his story are ever-present. Martin Gilbert gives us a vivid portrait, using Churchill's most personal letters and the recollections of his contemporaries, both friends and enemies, to go behind the scenes of some of the stormiest and most fascinating political events of our time.

Part 2 takes us from the end of the First World War to Churchill’s death in 1965. Christian Rodska reads the second part of Martin Gilbert’s epic, definitive biography of Winston Churchill.

Sir Winston Churchill

Superb narrator. Exciting and energetic narrative. Account of Churchill politically illuminating but some lack of complexity in regard to components of his personality and the historical events to which he devoted himself.

Interesting and compelling

I tried to read the hardback book but wasn’t able to stay focused. The Audible version made finishing it much easier. Very grateful!

Interesting long just like WC’s life

These books (Part 1 and 2) aren't that good. They give an overview of Churchill's life, glossing over controversies, leaving out details that would be to the detriment of the man, subtly suggesting that Churchill was without any serious faults. It paints an entertaining picture, but is rather superficial.
However, if you want a virtuoso performance by an incredible reader, this is your book. Rodska has a wonderful Churchill-accent and he can seamlessly switch from normal to Winston and back in one sentence. But that's just the beginning: I've heard American, Irish, French, German, Australian and a few more and that, paired with a lively reading make this a magnificent performance. A few times I became irritated by the hagiographic tendencies of the writer and wanted to put it down, but the joy of listening to this reader kept me going.

Superb performance

Although rather long, this is well worth listening to. It is quite straightforward and has no hero-worship. Today one does not hear enough about this great man, and such books redress that somewhat. The author is Churchill's authorized biographer, an eminent historian. The narration is well done.

Engaging biography of a great man, part 2

Greatness, tenacity, and accomplishment. THE mover shaker of the 20th century. Wish I had read it sooner.

A straight-forward biography of a most interesting character, very well written and excellently performed.

Very good

Like the first book in this series part 2 was a really enjoyable and enlightening book. Once again it was probably a little slanted towards Churchill and showed very few of his faults.
It also covered everything after the end of WW2 quite quickly, despite Churchill being opposition leader for some time and then Prime Minister again.

Overall a really good listen

The second installment of a really enjoyable work

Churchill was one of the top ten greatest leaders of all time. He loved people and his country. This carefully researched book does him justice, quoting his wonderful statements and rightly assessing his great heart. Trust this author to tell you what actually happened in the past!

Superb book

Churchill Part 2 deserves the same reputation as the man himself. Bold, interesting and comprehensive. If you are a fan of history and larger-than-life individuals, this book is both important and illuminating.
