About this listen
The long-awaited fourth audiobook in the New York Times best-selling Old Kingdom series by Garth Nix.
Award-winning author Garth Nix returns to the Old Kingdom with a thrilling prequel complete with dark magic, royalty, dangerous action, a strong heroine, and flawless world-building. This epic fantasy adventure is destined to be a classic, and is perfect for fans of Game of Thrones.
Clariel is the daughter of one of the most notable families in the Old Kingdom, with blood relations to the Abhorsen and, most important, to the King. She dreams of living a simple life but discovers this is hard to achieve when a dangerous Free Magic creature is loose in the city, her parents want to marry her off to a killer, and there is a plot brewing against the old and withdrawn King Orrikan. When Clariel is drawn into the efforts to find and capture the creature, she finds hidden sorcery within herself, yet it is magic that carries great dangers. Can she rise above the temptation of power, escape the unwanted marriage, and save the King?

Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap out of the audio, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse.

I decided that Orion Lake needed to die after the second time he saved my life. Everyone loves Orion Lake. Everyone else, that is. Far as I’m concerned, he can keep his flashy combat magic to himself. I’m not joining his pack of adoring fans. I don’t need help surviving the Scholomance, even if they do. Forget the hordes of monsters and cursed artifacts; I’m probably the most dangerous thing in the place. Just give me a chance and I’ll level mountains and kill untold millions, making myself the dark queen of the world.

Story
The city of the gods. Elantris once stood as the symbol of all that is beautiful. A sprawling metropolis of unrivaled grandeur, it was a symbol of power and strength, built to be as imposing as it was magnificent. The only thing more glorious than the city itself was its inhabitants, Godlike beings, with silvery skin and hair of the purest flowing white. Able to create powerful magics with a mere wave of their hands, the Elantrians were able to heal mortal wounds and create any object they desired. But Elantris fell...10 years ago.

a drip in a lake that becomes a tidal wave
I miss moggets prior voice. Tim curry captured this characters better where Graeme malcolm seems to have more flow and atmosphere which is great but I think mogget sounding sarcastic and care free is a part of his character.

Out of the entire book series, this is my favorite
I honestly read Sabriel, Lireal and Abhorsen first and completely skipped over this book because I had read that it was set 500 years before Sabriel and I just didn't really see what the point would be in reading it but I'm so glad I did because I actually enjoyed it the most out of the entire book series. If you have read all of the other books in this series, then you need to read this one as well.

I was hungry for some more Old Kingdom and this did it
I liked it. I found Clariel a hard character to like at first, but after I understood more about her and her life and her story, I liked her quite a lot. Though, I don't really understand why she is considered the "lost Abhorsen" because it seemed Bel was supposed to be the Abhorsen the whole time. Good book though. Worth it.

Shocking twist
Well this book left me heartbroken but it's so well written. A definite must if you've enjoyed other books in the Abhorsen series.

Fantastic!
I love Garth Nix as an author, he is brilliant at wordplay! It is so enveloping, the flow and descriptions suck you right in. It's as if you're watching the events unfold.

So happy to come back to this series!
brings me back to reading this in middle school and listening to Avril Lavigne in the background haha. After 10+ years I might just dive back into the original trilogy!

True to the rest
I loved the original trilogy when I was a kid. I read them until the bindings fell apart. This book brought about the same feeling and I will for sure be buying it and reading it to pieces as well!

Not up to the task
I love Garth Nix and his "Old Kingdom" world. That said, I was sort of let down by Clariel. There seems to be a lack of continuity, though I hope this will be rectified in "Goldenhand".

Read Goldenhand after!
This is my last favorite in the series, but I read Goldenhand after and really appreciated knowing the story of Clariel. It's kind of like remembrancing.
