Story
From a childish fear of the dark in "The End of the Party" to the chilling conclusion of the "Destructors" and the all-consuming selfishness of "May We Borrow Your Husband", this collection opens with three of Greene's most disturbing stories. Things take a surreal turn in "Under the Garden" before finally blossoming for a moment in "Two Gentle People", then there's a detective story and a brush with Greene's sardonic wit to finish.

Story
On a peaceful Sunday afternoon, Arthur Rowe comes upon a charity fete in the gardens of a Cambridgeshire vicarage where he wins a game of chance. If only this were an ordinary day. Britain is under threat by Germany, and the air raid sirens that bring the bazaar to a halt expose Rowe as no ordinary man. Recently released from a psychiatric prison for the mercy killing of his wife, he is burdened by guilt, and now, in possession of a seemingly innocuous prize, on the run from a nest of Nazi spies who want him dead.

Story
Be ready for some action, humor, and mystery in this anthology with short stories. You’ll listen about gangsters, witches, magic potions, interrogations, werewolves, and murder. Several stories have a murder victim, while others are all about theft or robberies. But in many cases, they spark the imagination and make up for a great way to sit back, relax, and read or listen to stories from a completely different world.

Good colection
I'm not surprised that the other reviews are mixed. Mystery short stories are a bit different. This collection is much better than average. The narrations were also fine, which i better than average for a collection. I have 2 stories in other collections. (Blue Cross/Bluebeard's Bathtub). I recommend this for those who like mystery collections.

Great stories if you're looking to punish yourself
I tried three different stories from this book and couldn't get past the first ten minutes of either one. Neither of the books sparked my interest in the beginning. I won't commit an hour to something that bores me in the first few minutes of listening.

Uneven Mix
An odd selection of stories, some of which are classics and some eminently forgettable. The narrators are mostly good, with Patrick Malahide standing out particularly. Overall though, the quality is uneven and the package not worth its few jewels.
