About this listen

Growing Clematis starts with buying the right plant for the right place. The first question we ask ourselves: “what is the function the new clematis has to play in the garden?” Clematis can be used as ground cover or climbing plants on its own or mixed with other garden plants. They can climb up a post, a climbing rose or grow right into the tops of trees. There is clematis for every season of the year. The colours of clematis are mostly pastel colours which form awesome colour combinations with the flowers of other garden plants like roses for instance. Its flowers can be large or small. Clematis benefits from planting deep and in general does best when its roots are planted in shade to keep cool and in moisture rich soil. In the same time it has to have its green growth and flowers in full sun. For more on ‘Growing Clematis’ see Chapter 1. There are many different types of clematis. The main difference is between natural clematis as we find them in the wild (species) and those that are ‘man-made (hybrids). You find a comprehensive list of Clematis with a short description of each in the chapter 4. The different types of Clematis are explained in Chapter 2. Most of us are familiar with, grow or would love to grow clematis with very large flowers such as Clematis Nelly Moser, The President, Ville de Lyon and Ernest Markham. There are many more and every year new hybrids are available for us gardeners. These beautiful flowers offer unforgettable summer moments of delight like the roses do. Pruning Clematis is easy if we follow some simple rules. Chapter 3 deals with the different ways clematis is pruned. Gardening & Horticulture Personal Development
