About this listen

For Clementine, spring is a really big deal. It’s the time for seeing her apple tree start to grow, for watching her friend Margaret go crazy with spring cleaning, and for going on the school trip to Plimoth Plantation. Clementine is ready for Ye Olden Times, but she isn’t so sure about surviving lunch there - the fourth graders have strict rules about no eating sounds. (What is snicking, anyway? ) If that wasn’t enough, Clementine also faces the challenges of learning Olive-language and surviving The Cloud on Bus 7. Hearing the pilgrim lady talk about why she made the long journey from England makes Clementine think about rules. Who makes them, and what do they mean to the people who have to live with them? Today Clementine has to decide which rules are made to be broken.

Would you listen to Clementine and the Spring Trip again? Why?

The story is fun yet the series is starting to wane. This recording is too fast and Jessica's voice has changed from the first few books. I would like for it to slow down. I had a really hard time understanding the Olive language and speed of recording did not help.

The story is fun and the children see some historical sites. This was interesting and unusual because we don't like in the pilgrim areas for this type of field trip. It was thought provoking.

Just as Clementine is always, this book is full of giggles and Clementine's view of the world. I am not sure most kids would get the nuances of Clementine's mother expecting a baby.

Any additional comments?

For reasons I do not understand, some of these books are listed as Sarah Pennypacker and others are Sara Pennypacker. Make sure you see all 6 books when you search for Clementine. While not exactly critical, it is helpful to listen in order. First is Clementine, second is The Talented Clementine, 3rd - Clementine's Letter, 4th - Friend of the Week, 5th - Family Meeting, 6th - Spring Trip.

Enjoyable, but......

The new baby is a little girl named Summer. Clementine named her this because she was born on the summer solstice at 12:01

A little spoiler for the next book

I liked books 2 through 7 in the Clementine series more than the first one. I have to admit, they are pretty good. My daughter loved them and I eventually warmed up to them.

What I did not warm to was the price. Each book is about two hours long, but they are priced the same as much longer books. That doesn’t seem fair.

If they were sold in bundles of 3 or maybe even 2 stories I would be good with that. But at one credit per book, I will return them, get my credits back, and get longer books for my kids. Maybe if this series goes on sale, I’ll re-buy them then.

Good stories, too expensive though

Any additional comments?

I like books that children and adults can both enjoy. This is one of them. The main character is a little girl, but my husband and I, as well as our two boys (ages 7 and 9) absolutely loved this book. So funny. The parents are great and Clementine is full of personality.

One thing that bugged me was Clementine's reaction to seeing a chicken (which is all too common). Kids need to know where their food comes from before they are 8 or 9 years old.

Wonderful!

I was a 3rd & 4th grade teacher for 10 years and Clementine was always my FAVORITE book character. Now, my book-loving daughter is 6, and she’s enjoying listening to Clementine with me. Some of it is slightly over her head (the cloud, and Baxter’s scheme) but she still loves every second of Clementine.

This was the first book I had not read previously so it was a delightful first read for us both.

A Family Favorite!
