About this listen

You will not believe what you are reading - even though it all feels so real.

Only a man like Smilin’ Jack could monetize civil war. After the infamous business tycoon launches a hit TV show that pits American and Confederate gladiators in brutal battles, his grisly spectacle draws the attention of psychopaths across the nation.

When a mysterious Christian nationalist sparks a nationwide manhunt after a string of massacres in the name of his God, Department of Homeland Security analyst Victoria Morales plunges into a deadly race against time to track down the elusive terrorist and prevent more bloodshed.

But with no leads, and constrained by government regulations, the FBI is left grasping at straws. Vicky is sick and tired of fighting a maniac with one hand tied behind her back – and she’s fed up with the violent culture glamorized by television shows like Coliseum.

As the fight between the gladiators spirals into a personal vendetta, it becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish the world of make-believe and that of reality. The Archangel doesn’t play by the rules – and to stop him, Vicky will have to take the law into her own hands.

Can Vicky take down the Archangel and prevent his twisted holy war? Or has Coliseum inspired so much hate that it’s pushed America over the edge?

Step into a gritty and suspenseful near-future thriller that delves into hard-hitting themes of American militarism and Christian nationalist terrorism. In a world where America’s fractures are portrayed through televised battles for all to see, Coliseum is a chilling exploration of what we’re willing to accept in the name of entertainment. Important questions

What I found most striking about Coliseum is its unflinching examination of the consequences of our actions. The book raises important questions about the impact of violence and militarism on our culture, and the ways in which we perpetuate harm and division.

Captivating

Fantasy swiftly becomes a reality in the mind of someone determined to take it further—and fast. A TV show that pushes fantasy to the extreme, staging battles between American and Confederate gladiators with real-world stakes, upends the nation. What was once mere imagination has become a reality.

The author, Henry L. Sullivan III, crafts a mesmerizing narrative that pushes violence and beliefs to the extreme through television, exploiting the gullibility of those who trust the news and media as absolute truth. He illustrates how easily values, actions, and beliefs can lead to deadly and crippling consequences. His character development is deliberate and seamless, with dialogue that flows authentically, staying true to each character and their actions. The plot twists are well-conceived, expertly executed, and genuinely unexpected.

The narrators were appropriately dramatic in their performance, adding to the complete immersion of the listener. They provided an engaging narrative structure as they worked seamlessly together allowing the narrative to flow naturally. They each spoke, were consistent in their character, and each had a steady cadence that allowed for smooth transitions and the plot to unfold smoothly.

This is a captivating book that lingers with the listener long after it ends. I needed a week or two to process it before writing this review. It delivers a powerful narrative, reinforcing the idea that anything is possible—and that the consequences of societal beliefs and actions can be far-reaching.

There were no issues with the quality or production of this audiobook. It was clear and crisp.

What a Wild Ride!

Coliseum is one of those books that keeps you glued from start to finish. The idea of a TV show mixing gladiator battles with modern-day civil war is so outrageous—and yet it feels eerily possible! The action is intense, and the story dives deep into some heavy themes like violence and extremism, but it’s all wrapped in a fast-paced, thrilling plot. Vicky Morales is such a strong lead—I was rooting for her the whole time! If you like gritty, edge-of-your-seat stories, this one’s a must-read.
