About this listen

The best-selling author of Enigma and Fatherland turns to today's Vatican in a ripped-from-the-headlines novel and gives us his most ambitious, pause-resisting thriller yet - where the power of God is nearly equaled by the ambition of men.

The pope is dead. Behind the locked doors of the Sistine Chapel, 118 cardinals from all over the globe will cast their votes in the world's most secretive election. They are holy men. But they have ambition. And they have rivals. Over the next 72 hours, one of them will become the most powerful spiritual figure on earth.

Critic reviews

"Narrator Roy McMillan takes full advantage of the opportunity to display his range. While not strictly miraculous, his transformation of Cardinal Lomeli, the protagonist, from dispirited to Spirit-filled is most certainly charismatic.... McMillan's performance is a triumph, as is the book itself." (AudioFile)

The ending ruined it, but, I felt this book was well researched when it came to the Catholic church and the customes of a conclave. Harris writes well. Narration is also excellent, though it wasn't one I was familiar with.

Well researched, but the ending, ugh.

Weird, surprise ending! Found the ending very unsettling. Up to the end of the book, it was very interesting and well-written. But for the ending, I loved it!

Unsettling conclusion

Harris does it again. Great story. The detail into the process and politics, no better writer of politics than Robert Harris.

Wow. Did not see that one coming!!

I grabbed this book because there’s a movie coming out in the near future and I wanted to read it. I enjoyed the pace and narration of the book. The twist and the story took me by surprise. I loved it. Cannot wait for the movie!

What a twist!

Really like this story! Robert Harris is a fantastic writer and I have read most of his books over the years! The reader is very good with just the right amount of emphasis on words - great voices for the different characters!

Great novel!

That’s a lot of Cardinals! Had to write down names. I don’t write reviews but this story was fascinating . Totally enjoyed the characters. I can’t safely say more.

That was good. That was good

I won't give away the ending but I have to say that I was sorely disappointed in it

this book had me up until the end

I did not like the ending

And I did. But then again I didn’t! Definitely worth the read. Wondering how well it will translate to big screen.

Thought I had it figured out….

Very good story right to the point where the conclave was about to start, then you knew what was going to happen. Then by the time the ending was happening it went way “too Hollywood” and I knew why they’re making a movie of it, disappointing.

Very Predictable
