Story
Hans Holbein the Younger is chiefly celebrated for his beautiful and precisely realized portraiture, which includes representations of Henry VIII, his advisors Thomas More and Thomas Cromwell, his wives Jane Seymour and Anne of Cleves, and an array of the Tudor lords and ladies encountered during the course of two sojourns in England. But beyond these familiar images, which have come to define our perception of the age, Holbein was a multifaceted genius: a humanist, satirist, and political propagandist, and a deft man whose work was rich in layers of symbolism and allusion.

Story
In its voracious hunger to fill its decks and spars with the bodies of strong young sailors, the nineteenth century US Navy and the commercial maritime industry welcomed eccentrics, criminals, outcasts, and misfits into a community of the marginalized, one that held very different values and expectations than the towns and villages from which the young men fled, a community that offered a tentative refuge to men who were sexually attracted to other men. Benemann provides an in-depth examination of nineteenth century LGBTQ culture as it developed at sea and in America's port cities.

Story
In freewheeling 1920s Paris, Kiki de Montparnasse was once the symbol of bohemian Paris. But if she is remembered today, it is only for posing for several now-celebrated male artists, including Amedeo Modigliani and Alexander Calder, and especially photographer Man Ray. Kiki and Man Ray met in 1921 during a chance encounter at a cafe. What followed was an explosive decade-long connection, both professional and romantic, during which the couple grew and experimented as artists, competed for fame, and created many of the shocking images that cemented Man Ray's reputation.

THE Truth, Not “HER Truth”

By: Tom Bower
Publisher's summary
The story of the woman at the center of the most famous scandal of the nineteenth century.
In the spring of 1895, the life of Constance Wilde changed irrevocably. Up until the conviction of her husband, Oscar, for homosexual crimes, she had held a privileged position in society. Part of a gilded couple, she was a popular children’s author, a fashion icon, and a leading campaigner for women’s rights. A founding member of the magical society The Golden Dawn, her pioneering and questioning spirit encouraged her to sample some of the more controversial aspects of her time. Mrs. Oscar Wilde was a phenomenon in her own right. But that spring, Constance’s entire life was eclipsed by scandal. Forced to flee to the Continent with her two sons, her glittering literary and political career ended abruptly. She lived in exile until her death.
Franny Moyle now tells Constance’s story with a fresh eye. Drawing on numerous unpublished letters, she brings to life the story of a woman at the heart of fin-de-siecle London and the Aesthetic movement. In a compelling and moving tale of an unlikely couple caught up in a world unsure of its moral footing, Moyle unveils the story of a woman who was the victim of one of the greatest betrayals of all time.

Story
In a gay nightclub in Orlando on June 12, 2016, the shooter, Omar Mateen, murdered 49 people and wounded 53 others. The attack was the deadliest act of violence against the LGBTQ+ community in US history and the deadliest terrorist attack in the United States since 9/11. But there’s a story you haven’t heard. The FBI had a secret history with the shooter and his father. To obscure that history, the FBI pushed a false story that the media dutifully carried—that the attacker was a secretly gay Islamist extremist who had chosen to target Pulse and planned the attack for weeks.

Monster stories aren’t just meant to entertain. They’re meant to inform, even educate. Above all, they ask us to question our own humanity. Nowhere is this truer than in stories of serial killers. What are the origins of this monstrous archetype? Why are we so fascinated with such gruesome terror? What do they reveal about our fears and anxieties? Explore these and other questions in Serial Killers: Real and Imagined, where public scholar Emily Zarka looks at the serial-killer trope across history, from murky 17th-century legends to 21st-century true-crime obsessions.

Story
In weeks after the September 11 attacks, 18-year-old Mansoor Adayfi was kidnapped by Afghan militia and sold to US forces for bounty money. After months of interrogations, he was sent to the US military prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, as one of its first prisoners. Like the nearly 800 other men imprisoned at Guantanamo, Adayfi didn’t know why he was imprisoned or for how long. He had never seen a skyscraper and couldn’t imagine what the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center looked like, much less how they were destroyed.

Best-selling author Bryan Burrough recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.

"The Importance of Being CONSTANCE..."
I don't know why I was curious to pick up this tale - I love the genre of memoir and didn't know anything about Constance Holland Wilde. Loving the wit of Oscar Wilde, I thought it might be interesting to meet the woman who might have influenced the brilliant Oscar Wilde quote: "Be Yourself...Everyone Else is Already Taken." Constance Wilde was a pioneer in her own right - smart, innovative, literate, formidable, creative, sensible, and politically progressive – who was also an independent thinker and lovingly loyal. The scandals she had to live through and endure were no doubt brutal. Oscar Wilde's very brazen attempt to live freely and explore his homosexual nature at a time when it was dangerous to do so meant it was also challenging for his wife – who often had to find legal workarounds for their lives, family, and friends who had sympathy for them both and tried to help make the best of a no-win situation.
Much of Constance's motivation was spent trying to find an outlet for her own creative identity which included her involvement as a social and political influencer, fashion pioneer, creative writer and poet – at the same time trying to properly raise the couple's two young sons Cyril and Vyvyan because of Oscar's unpredictable absences. Their marriage was no doubt difficult - but there seemed to be a genuine friendship and compatibility of fondness and trust between them until Oscar's behavior left her feeling exasperated and betrayed.
It's always amazing to me that biographers and memoirists are able to reconstruct a period in history that was so long ago - and uncover ample evidence of events, states of mind, and other sumptuous details from days gone by. Sarah Nichol's narration is elegant and swift - not pretending to put on character voices or embellish the story with her own point of view. Putting pen to paper was such the trusted way - and hoping that only the intended recipient received the juicy words inside - no matter how long the distance the letter traveled is really a marvel of miracles. I recently listened to "The Magician" by Colm Toibin on Audible which was a biography of the writer Thomas Mann (who also enjoyed a secret homosexual life while staying married and fathering six children). That so much of Mann's secret life survived because of correspondence saved really helps the writer paint a truer portrait that would have been totally lost to history without it. Quite fascinating.
