About this listen
It's 1954. In this Western cowboy novel, six Old West cowboys and a 10-year-old boy meet for a weekly cribbage game. While the old men spin tales of days gone by on the trail, a real-life adventure stirs around them. The boy with the red-straw cowboy hat, cap gun, and leather bullet belt with silver-painted wooden bullets remembers it well. Maybe he wasn't born 100 years too late.

Story
The final novel from a great American storyteller. Donal Cameron is being raised by his grandmother, the cook at the legendary Double W ranch in Ivan Doig's beloved Two Medicine Country of the Montana Rockies, a landscape that gives full rein to an 11-year-old's imagination. But when Gram has to have surgery for "female trouble" in the summer of 1951, all she can think to do is to ship Donal off to her sister in faraway Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

He landed in a small Kansas town that had big dreams, no name, and the need for an honest lawman. Tom figured that a knuckle-and-skull man from Five Points would be perfect for the job. Story
On the American frontier, every gun tells a story. A boy in Texas waits for a Christmas present he chose from a Montgomery Ward catalog. The present, a brand new, lever action Winchester 1886 and a box of its big .50-caliber slugs, never makes it there. Instead, the rifle is caught up in a train robbery and starts a long and violent journey of its own - from the hands of a notorious, kill-crazy outlaw to an Apache renegade to a hardscrabble rancher and beyond.

afternoon of a lifetime, a lifetime in 1 afternoon
One of those stories you wish would never end....but you know in the back of your head that boys can't stay 10 forever & old men can't live on forever. Sweet, a little sad, & as cowboys should be- a little bit ornery while living out the code.
