About this listen

Captain Charles Scheffel is one of 12 persons whose war experiences were featured in the History Channel production, WWII IN HD, a 10-hour color series narrated by Gary Sinise. CRACK! AND THUMP is Scheffel's chilling account of ground combat of a young company-grade officer who fought with the 9th Infantry Division in North Africa, Sicily, France, Belgium, and Germany. Scheffel vividly recalls the terror, mind-numbing fatigue, raw emotions, and horrific conditions fighting men endured to achieve victory in World War II. A very interesting story covering WWII from a personal and unique perspective. The machine narration used here is good overall but does have some telltale bugs

Good story

I didn’t care for the computerized reading! A number of mistakes. Words were pronounced wrong!

AI reading!

A good first-hand story and interesting aspects but the AI virtual voice comes across as flat. There are also numerous strange pauses throughout, which degrades from the listening experience. I'm about half-way through and while interesting, not sure I can stick with the story because of the voice. It lacks human intonation, emphasis, and flow.

Good story but virtual voice comes across as flat

Love firsthand accounts of ordinary people who relate their extraordinary life and death experiences in war and their humanity through their trying times. This is such an account provided by the subject of this book and was done in such a manner that once stated it was hard to stop.

Fantastic firsthand account of WW2 Infantry combat in Africa, Italy, and Normandy to Germany.

Story was interesting however the virtual voice bad. Constantly mispronouncing words, awkward pauses, etc. Would not recommend Audible continue using virtual voice.

I remember the Author telling his story about getting that hotel room in San Antonio for him and his Ruthie on Ken Burns PBS World War II Documentary.
So glad to hear the whole story. My Grandfather served in many of the same places, and came home safe to my Grandmother Ruth.

I remember you Captain.

The story of Captain Charles Schaffel 9th ID WWII is a compelling story of the experiences of 9th Division soldiers in the war. I have also seen Capt. Sheffel’s interview on the documentary World War II in HD. The greatness of his story is lessened by the robotic voice of the AI reader. I would highly recommend the book but read it yourself or slightly speed up the AI narrator. I have read and listened to hundreds of war books and war stories need the expression of the human reader to bring their message to life. Thank you for your service Captain Charles “Charley” Scheffel!

Not a fan of AI Voice
