About this listen

Poised between his lush introversion and the brutal realm of his every day, a young artist considers the price of precarity in this powerful short story by Justin Torres, the author of We the Animals.

A promising illustrator moves into adulthood contemplating all that he’s had to do for money - from the mundane to the grueling to the sexual. He also reflects on everything that has slipped away, including a boyfriend, close acquaintances, success, and allure. But sketch by sketch, he sometimes feels the enormity of all that is possible.

Justin Torres’s Crewelwork is part of Currency, a compounding collection of stories about wealth, class, competition, and collapse. If time is money, deposit here with interest. Read or listen in a single sitting.

unexpected treat

I'm NOT one who reads or listens to audiobooks. I honestly just did it to get the stamps for Amazon day but this may have just changed my mind. the descriptive words and the content kept me interested and curious about what would happen next and I could see a movie playing in my mind it was something I never thought I would ever experience. now I'm looking for audio books that I've been told about to listen to because this may have just made me turn into an audiobook reader.

Wilson Cruz was an absolute surprise and delight.

I borrowed this title on Kindle Unlimited for the Hispanic Heritage Month achievement during the 2023 Kindle Summer Challenge. I didn't pay attention to the audiobook that was available with the borrowed title, but I have my Kindle settings to automatically download the audiobook, if available, when I download and start reading an ebook. The second the download finished it started playing and I immediately recognized Wilson Cruz. He's an actor that I feel like I've grown up with and I've adored him from My So-Called Life up to Star Trek Discovery with so much in between. The words of this story, on their own in black and white, as just interesting and ok. 3 stars for the ebook alone. But read by Wilson, the words have life and emotion and spark thought that just reading wouldn't have. If you're at all interested in this story, go with the audiobook.

Wilson Cruz is the narrator.

I could listen to anything read to me by Wilson Cruz. He’s amazing. I used to watch him on the TV show, My So Called Life.

Heartbreaking and hopeful

Beautiful performance by actor Wilson Cruz of this phenomenal story by Justin Torres. The main character’s journey through love and loss and the urge for creative expression all felt familiar and truthful to me and I was taken in from beginning to end. This is the reason I love Audible, to hear great literary work interpreted by great talent. Thank you

Great Work

I enjoyed this reflective story, especially since the narration performance was so well done. I got a real sense of who the main character was through the voice work. The short story felt complete as it depicted the growth of an artist from his humble beginning and GA e understanding to what inspires him.
Poignant.

Eh

This was hard for me to get through. Although the performance was great the actual story was uninteresting to me.

Boring

Slow moving uninteresting storyline. It was very fragmented and the narrator was just pitiful and lame. It was supposed to be a thriller… There was no thrill.
