Three excellent stories

Rex Stout never fails to deliver. intriguing mysteries and interesting characters. This book was extra special in that there are three mysteries for Wolfe n Goodwin to solve.

Master file may need to be re-uploaded.

Stories are fun, narrator is great, but the cutoff between end of chapter and beginning of next chapter is sometimes a little too sharp.

As always, Stout creates wonderful atmosphere in Nero Wolf Mystries

Another mystery author expressed the way I feel about Rex Stout’s Nero Wolfe stories. They can be read many a time “showing the importance of atmosphere.”

Archie Goodwin, Wolfe’s legman with a tape recorder for a mind. Fritz, his chef extraordinaire who serves the best meals in New York, three times a day. The plant rooms on the roof of the brownstone with Theodore, where Wolfe spends 2 hours twice a day tending to his thousands of orchids. The interplay between everyone, along with the clients, murder suspects, Inspector Cramer, Sargent Stebbins, and assorted other characters, makes every story a joy to read, and brings an occasional chuckle or grin to my face as Archie spars with Wolfe, Inspector Cramer, Stebbins, and others.

If you get hooked, you won’t just want to read an occasional Nero Wolfe story, you just may end up collecting all of Rex Stout’s Nero Wolfe mysteries. Wolfe, a sedentary, over weight genius who never leaves the house on business. Archie is the one who ventures out of doors for him, to bring people, information, and wise cracks back so the genius can work out who-dun-it.

The first story, “Fer-de-lance” was published in 1934, so you also get the feel of the times along with everything else. The last book “A Family Affair” was published in 1975, until 3 “recently discovered Nero Wolfe Classics” (short stories) were published in a single volume in 1985. That in fact, was the year I came across the Nero Wolfe mysteries in a small library in Milford, NH. Every now and then I begin with “Fer-de-lance” and read the books and short stories in the order they were published, just a choice I’ve made. It makes it interesting to read and feel the times slowly change from the era of 1930s through to the mid 1970s.

Try one of the mysteries, in a hard copy, e-book, or in an audible format. To me the printed page brings the stories to life better, but I read them as e-books and have a large number in audio books format to listen to when I really want to lay back, relax, and enjoy spending time with extremely well written mysteries that transport me to another time and place!

You Can Count on Stout

After listening to some less than stellar books, it was a pleasure to come home to Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin in their brownstone in New York. The three stories here are good ones, and we even have a murder in Wolfe's office (a storyline Stout has used before). Pritchard's voice is perfectly suited for Wolfe and he does a credible Archie. This recording, though, seems strangely edited, with a new chapter coming at times with no pause at all. It doesn't take away, though, from these marvelous tales.

Hard to give any Archie & Nero book less than 5

One of the collections of three or four novellas by Rex Stout. I generally like the full novels better, but these are great too. One of the stories include one of the greatest dangers to Archie in the entire series.

As per usual, excellently read by Michael Prichard.

If you have never read or listen to any of these before, this is probably a good place to jump on, as they're short. And of the collections, this may be my favorite one. Each one of these three stories is tight, and includes all of the outstanding features of every Nero & Archie book
