Publisher's summary

James Sallis, author of the Lew Griffin detective stories, has been praised as one of Southern literature's most original voices. In Cypress Grove, a murder with eerie connections to the past brings a man back to his calling. Turner was a homicide cop long ago, until he got mixed up in the wrong case and ended up behind bars himself. Now retired to a cabin in a small Southern town, Turner's been recruited by the local Sheriff to help solve a bizarre and gruesome case.

Nice pace, short but well done

This wasn't a "huge" story about saving the world. Just a small mystery with some character background slowly revealed as the pursuit unfolds. The pacing is relaxed and mirrors the small town flavor of the story, and while i'm not sure i would have liked this for a longer read, this seemed just about right. Enjoyable.

Excellent Southern Gothic

Excellent Southern Gothic. A curious theme is the making & value of B or C movies. As in all good Southern Gothic there is madness at every turn conveyed as the madness in every single life. Madness the current exposure of political life is transforming from fiction to real life.

atmospheric mystery

i enjoyed listening to this story unfold. the story and characters were interesting and fully formed. i enjoyed the regional cadence and phrasing. the narrator was excellent at dealing with the flashback material -- keeping the listener current with the sequencing. there were enough twists and turns to keep one listening.

Lame and rambling...

I still don't know what this book was about. Where there are some clever sentences? Absolutely. Do I doubt that the author is a bright guy? Not at all. Will I be going back to this author anytime soon? No.in my humble opinion, this story failed on multiple levels. I don't know enough about fiction writing to provide a sophisticated analysis or anything, but I know that it's a miracle I got through this one.I chose this author because I greatly enjoyed the movie Drive, based on his book. So this was a disappointing experience.
