About this listen

Author Ruth Sawyer, 1937 Newbery Medal recipient, penned her last book, Daddles, in 1964. Daddles delightfully captures the innocence of childhood as a brother and sister fall in love with a plain hound dog during their summer vacations in Maine. Though owned by the “meanest, dirtiest and most shiftless family in Haddock Harbor,” the young siblings “adopt” Daddles for two glorious summers. The intelligent, endearing hound dog wins the hearts of all as he joins in with capturing a thief, escaping a house fire, and dodging trouble at a local circus. All dog lovers will warmly embrace this book that rekindles the memories of the tenderness a child and dog can share.

I grabbed this book because I love dog books, even though I usually hate how they end. This did not disappoint, as it delivers an almost magical story of the bond between two kids and a dog. But it is so much more than that. It takes you to a simple time in the horse-and-buggy days of Maine when neighbors watched out for each other, and a basket of wild blueberries could be traded for doughnuts and cakes. The story is full of warmth and the wonder of a dog's love, through the eyes of a young girl.

I was given a free copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

A great story of simpler times

As a dog lover, this book was lots of fun and always had me rooting for the pup! Daddles really dives into the strong relationship between a children and dogs. it made me feel like a kid again and reminded me about how nothing in the world mattered other than the love of my dog!

The adventures that the kids went on with daddles was fun and exciting and it was hard for me to stop listening. Although I struggled with the last chapter, this book really shows how little time we truly get to spend with dogs, but how long the impact and love will last.

A wonderful story, I would definitely recommend listening to it! Stark Wilson did a remarkable job to bring the listener back to simpler times of Maine and made the story enjoyable to listen to.

Perfect for a dog lover!
