About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

This Penguin Classic is performed by Ellie Kendrick, known for her role as Meera Reed in Game of Thrones, she has also starred in Vanity Fair, and The Diary of Anne Frank. This definitive recording includes an introduction by David Lodge, read by Roy McMillan.

Travelling in Europe with her family, Daisy Miller, an exquisitely beautiful young American woman, presents her fellow-countryman, Winterbourne, with a dilemma he cannot resolve. Is she deliberately flouting social convention in the outspoken way she talks and acts, or is she simply ignorant of those conventions? When she strikes up an intimate friendship with an urbane young Italian, her flat refusal to observe the codes of respectable behaviour leave her perilously exposed.

In Daisy Miller, James created his first great portrait of the enigmatic and dangerously independent American woman, a figure who would come to dominate his later masterpieces.

Ellie Kendrick as Daisy is fantastic

Ellie Kendricks as Daisy' is my new alltime favorite character, the innocence and beauty of the character shine through.

Moving

Until listening to this reading, I must confess that Daisy Muller always left me rather cold. But Ms Kendrick’s narration, and especially her interpretation of the dialogue, was transformational. I loved it.

Beautifully read! Delightful

Excellent performance. Does Justice to Henry James’ charming story! What a portrait of transatlantic cultural cross purposes. Each character beautifully picked out by the accent. Wonderfully read. Than you.

I only wish that first chapter (intro) would of been read after the book was done. why sum up the book first?

Impetuous but Innocent

I have enjoyed this short novel immensely! Daisy Miller is an impetuous young woman of means, who did not understand what is meant by "when in Rome do as the Romans do." She is capitivatingly scandelous with her low-brow American new-money ways. She flirts and flaunts, but she is not ill-willed just ignorant on what it is to be a lady in Europe.

Great story

If you can't decide whether Daisy Miller is innocent or crude you haven't experienced enough romance. If you believe that she deserves punishment for her reckless lifestyle you've never truly lived.

Dull and ridiculous

Frivolous plot and main character. Really glad it was short. I don’t know what the point was.
