About this listen

Two Native American boys have vanished into thin air, leaving a pool of blood behind them. Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn of the Navajo Tribal Police has no choice but to suspect the very worst, since the blood that stains the parched New Mexican ground once flowed through the veins of one of the missing, a young ZuNi. But his investigation into a terrible crime is being complicated by an important archaeological dig and a steel hypodermic needle. And the unique laws and sacred religious rites of the ZuNi people are throwing impassable roadblocks in Leaphorn's already twisted path, enabling a craven murderer to elude justice or, worse still, to kill again.

better than when I read it

Hillerman was the best. combined with Guidall's narration and you have near perfection. I read them so long ago, they were fresh and very engrossing. Listen to one if you read them long ago, you will not be disappointed.

Great pictures of the Southwest

Tony Hillerman weaves great pictures of the Southwest as he draws us into his 2nd Leaphorn mystery. This time, we learn the story of two boys, raised by different tribes but connected by being sent to the same school. Joe Leaphorn must unravel the mystery connected to this relationship and try to save lives in the process, while encumbered by the differences in White, Zuni, and Navajo cultures and laws.

Loved it!

it is a wonderful story. I loved how the author delved into Navajo (Deni) and Zuni religion. He explained their thinking and reactions via his characters in the storyline. I enjoyed the Narrator.

Logic, Imagination and Perseverence Illuminate

Detective Leaphorn's insightful and persistent thoughtfulness propels this interesting storyline to unexpected but relevant conclusions. A satisfactory read.

Great as always

I love Tony Hillerman and his accurate and visceral descriptions of my home stage make me feel like I’m right there. I had to give this reading only four stars, however, due to some of the pronunciation. First, Shalako. George Guidall puts the emphasis on the second syllable. Growing up in the places described in the book, I never heard it pronounced lime like, but with the emphasis on the first syllable. Also, several references to Ramah and the Ramah-Navajo Reservation are also mispronounced. Ramah is with a long a in the first syllable. Nitpicking I know, but I love the area.

Hauntingly Beautiful!

one of those books that can really transport me to a different place. l have come to really appreciate the struggle of native Americans to accommodate the intrusion of the white man's world. Narration is spot on.
