About this listen

Ordered to hold an abandoned army post, John Dunbar found himself alone, beyond the edge of civilization. Thievery and survival soon forced him into the Indian camp, where he began a dangerous adventure that changed his life forever.

Set in 1863, the novel follows Lieutenant John Dunbar on a magical journey from the ravages of the Civil War to the far reaches of the imperiled American frontier, a frontier he naively wants to see "before it is gone".

haven't seen this movie about 50 times in my life I finally got around to reading the book. I was not disappointed! The book is even better than the movie, as this so often the case. and the narration by George godell is fantastic!

great story! great narration!

I saw Dances with Wolves with Kevin Costner as a teenager when it first came out and was moved by how powerful the story was for similar movies at that time - not to mention the longest movie (3 hours) I'd ever seen. I never read the book until a few weeks ago when it popped up on Audible due to my being a fan of the reader, George Guidall. The book is as good as the movie - and the movie follows the book very, very closely. Between Michael Blake's description of American in the 1800's and performance by George Guidall - it's one of my favorite books this year.

And I had no idea there was a sequel - I'll start that one ASAP!

Great book / great movie / great performance

Having seen this favored movie many times, I was pleased to have the story read to me by a narrator who did it justice.

Classic story of a bygone era

I loved this book and its look into the past. It is heartbreaking the way it was and how history ruined a beautiful people.

Worth every word in it!

The movie pales in comparison with the book. This book gives a wonderful look into the mind of the Comanches; those they fought and those they found. I can't imagine how some reviewers did not like the narrator George Guidall, on of the most popular narrators of all time. Perhaps they never listened to the Walt Longmire series.

All the characters are well developed and each is different and very interesting. And when I say "all character" I mean animal as well as human.

Superb book, superb narrator

It’s truly remarkable how closely the book and the movies story were. Having seen the movie countless times, I could close my eyes and watch the scene play out in my head while listening to Michael Blake’s words.

If you were a fan of the movie, then this book helps to color in the edges of the map that is the world of Dances with Wolves.

Finally a book where the movie had done it justice

As always, with each book he reads, George Guidell brings this story to life like no one else could.

We've all seen the movie, and it was a good one. They did stay relatively true to the book, which I like.

Overall, just a good listen.

Better than the movie. Although the movie does follow closely but different ending. Can’t wait to listen to 2nd book.
