About this listen

Ordered to hold an abandoned army post, John Dunbar found himself alone, beyond the edge of civilization. Thievery and survival soon forced him into the Indian camp, where he began a dangerous adventure that changed his life forever.

Set in 1863, the novel follows Lieutenant John Dunbar on a magical journey from the ravages of the Civil War to the far reaches of the imperiled American frontier, a frontier he naively wants to see "before it is gone".

The book was as great as the movie!

The narrator, George Guidall, has never failed to keep me involved with the story and this wonderful book came to life with his expertise. I seek out good books with him as the narrator!

Read to me George

Liked narrater the best, story line is good, better than movie. Best part is still Mr. Guidell’s narration of book. Best narrater ever.

The movie was great, this was better!

A movie only does so much for a story, but so much internal dialogue is lost in translation.
After falling in love with the story as presented in the movie, this completes the love affair by aging in the missing parts.
George Guidall does such a great job of reading the story.

Great story

I have always enjoyed the movie starring Kevin Costner and was delighted to see this book in audible format. The movie won several Oscars and the book was even better. This story provides a deeply personal view into the Native American culture, both the beauty and brutality of their existence. This is a must read.

An engaging western

I loved the movie, but it has been many years since seeing it, so I was excited about listening to the book. This book was slow at the start, but grew on me as it continued. The last third was really good. The story is a classic. Lieutenant John Dunbar is alone at an abandoned fort on the edge of the frontier. He befriends the local Cherokee Indians, eventually feeling more Indian than white. The story is great but the writing falls short. The author explains too much instead of letting the reader infer background from the story. By the end, the story was so engaging to me, I didn't think about how it was told. This is a very fun book. I liked how Dunbar gradually changes from seeing the world as a white soldier to seeing it as a Cherokee Indian. The reader was good, too.

Entrancing

I loved the movie of this book and was surprised (in a good way) that the movie adhered very closely to the book. There were a few divergences, which were, in themselves, telling. I think these were more about making the movie more Hollywood than to make the story more engaging. It is a wonderful read and portrays the first nations culture with dignity and charm. It also gives a subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) commentary on the way western civilisation treats nature and wildlife.

Just like the movie

This is almost Word for Word like the movie. If you feel like reliving it, then this is a fun book. The narration is old-school.

Fantastic!

Being a teenager when the movie came out, of course I watched it before reading the book. I loved the movie, but I love the book even more. It follows very closely, but the intricate details are what make this such a spectacular read. I am excited to see what The Holy Road does with the story.
