Eine marxistische Kritik am Kapitalismus!
Anders als der reale Sozialismus bricht der Kapitalismus nicht zusammen - es sei denn durch "äußere Anstöße von extremer Heftigkeit" und eine "glaubwürdige Alternative im Innern". Dieser Einschätzung des französischen Historikers Fernand Braudel folgt Elmar Altvater in seinem nunmehr in siebter Auflage erschienenen Buch.
Die Dynamik der modernen Gesellschaften verdankt sich der "Dreifaltigkeit" von europäischer Rationalität der Weltbeherrschung, kapitalistischen sozialen Formen und fossilen Energien. Dies ist die Grundlage der "geo-ökonomischen" Globalisierung und des "geopolitischen" neuen Imperialismus, einer Allianz von marktgläubigem Neoliberalismus und auf militärische Macht setzendem Neokonservativismus. Doch ist der Kapitalismus nicht stabil und krisenfrei. Die Finanzkrisen der vergangenen Jahrzehnte sind für wachsende Ungleichheit, ja für Armut und Elend in der Welt verantwortlich. Dass die Begrenztheit von fossiler und nuklearer Energie ein äußerer Anstoß von besonderer Heftigkeit ist, haben die Hurrikane Katrina und Rita zu Bewusstsein gebracht: Eine kapitalistische Gesellschaft ohne Öl versinkt im Chaos. Im Innern der Gesellschaft reifen aber "glaubwürdige Alternativen" heran: Die Ansätze einer "solidarischen Ökonomie" und ökologisch nachhaltigen Gesellschaft. Der Kapitalismus, wie wir ihn kennen, gerät an ein Ende.
Elmar Altvater (1938 - 2018) war ein deutscher Politikwissenschaftler, Autor und Professor für Politikwissenschaft am Otto-Suhr-Institut der FU Berlin. Nach der Emeritierung am 30. September 2004 war Altvater in Forschung und Lehre am Institut weiterhin aktiv. Außerdem war er Mitglied im wissenschaftlichen Beirat von Attac. Altvater veröffentlichte regelmäßig in der Wochenzeitung der Freitag und dem Magazin marx21.
