In Frankreich hat kein wichtiges historisches Ereignis stattgefunden, das nicht von Paris ausgegangen oder in Paris beendet worden wäre. Diese Stadt hat alles schon gehabt, und nichts kann sie mehr in Erstaunen setzen. Nun gibt es nicht mehr von allen den alten Ereignissen Zeugen aus Stein oder Erz – aber durch die Jahrhunderte, in Bauweise, Hausanordnung und Parkanpflanzung hat sich etwas erhalten, eine Tradition, ein Konservatismus, eine geschichtliche Überlieferung.
