Publisher's summary

A captivating novel of rich spectacle and royal scandal, Days of Splendor, Days of Sorrow spans fifteen years in the fateful reign of Marie Antoinette, France's most legendary and notorious queen.

Paris, 1774. At the tender age of eighteen, Marie Antoinette ascends to the French throne alongside her husband, Louis XVI. But behind the extravagance of the young queen's elaborate silk gowns and dizzyingly high coiffures, she harbors deeper fears for her future and that of the Bourbon dynasty.

From the early growing pains of marriage to the joy of conceiving a child, from her passion for Swedish military attache Axel von Fersen to the devastating Affair of the Diamond Necklace, Marie Antoinette tries to rise above the gossip and rivalries that encircle her. But as revolution blossoms in America, a much larger threat looms beyond the gilded gates of Versailles-one that could sweep away the French monarchy forever.

An amazing read!

This book is incredibly well researched and written. Overall, the author captures the frankness of one character: Marie Antoinette. Although she was not perfect human, this book shares the struggles she faced during the events leading up to the French Revolution.

Well researched and written

If you are looking for a historical account of Marie Antoinette's life, this is not the book series for you; on the other hand, if you are looking for a beautiful narration of her life that happens to be exceptionally well-researched and accurate, this is what you are looking for.
Juliet Grey creates a believable discourse between individuals. She portrays what might have happened behind closed doors, basing the storyline on reliable sources and serving us with excellent historical fiction that should not offend even the most significant history buff.

Worth the Wait

After listening to Becoming Marie Antoinette, I waited anxiously for this novel to be on Audible. Now that I’ve listened to it completely, I can say that Days of Splendor, Days of Sorrow may be even better than the first novel! The story is as captivating as any fully fictional tale, with its unraveling of plots and in-depth humanization of iconic historical persons. Grey is an exceptional narrator, with a charming voice, including just the right amount of French pronunciations to increase the feeling of having a truly foreign experience. I am ready to listen on to the next book!
