Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka is a collection of short stories by Nikolai Gogol, written from 1831 to 1832. They appeared in various magazines and were published in book form when Gogol, who had spent his life in Ukraine up to the age of 19, was 22. The White Guard is less famous than Mikhail Bulgakov's comic hit, The Master and Margarita, but it is a lovely book, though completely different in tone. It is set in Kiev during the Russian revolution and tells a story about the war's effect on a middle-class family (not workers). The story was not politically correct and thereby contributed to Bulgakov's lifelong troubles with the Soviet authorities. Hadji Murad, Tolstoy's final novel, tells the story of a real-life Caucasian Avar general who served under Imam Shamil, the leader of the Muslim tribes of the Northern Caucuses and, for a time, Russia's greatest enemy. Hadji Murad plans to defect to the Russians and then lead a Russian-backed army to defeat Shamil.
