About this listen

No matter how deep you dig, you can't bury the past.

Detective Jack Martin looks forward to a carefree summer in the Colorado Rockies. But fate has other plans. After a call from an old friend, Jack is on the road to Texas, headed for certain danger.

After archeologists unearth human bones on a family ranch, one of them is mysteriously murdered. Law enforcement is quick to blame Mexican cartels. Others blame an organized band of thieves wreaking havoc on area ranchers.

As Jack digs for the truth, things become even more sinister. The family patriarch has recently died in a tragic accident. But now Jack wonders if it was murder.

Could a legend of lost treasure provide a clue to the mystery? Will Jack find the killer before someone else dies?

Returning to Texas, Jack faces a part of his past that has haunted him for decades. But it’s not retribution he’s after. It’s justice.

DEATH IN A HARSH LAND is a story of murder and mystery set in the unforgiving landscape of West Texas, and the fifth book in the suspenseful Mountain Resort Mystery Series.

ANOTHER WINNER!

Death in a Harsh Land by Shannon Work & read by Boyd Barrett is fantastic. If you love who done its (like me), you’ll love these books. I’m usually pretty good at guessing who the killer is, but never once have I successfully done it with any of these books. This latest one was no different, she stumped me again.
For those wondering, no you don’t need to have read any of her previous books in the series before this one. They’re completely independent stories & you can read them in any order. The narrator is fantastic for these stories too & his ability to tell the story is an added highlight. You won’t be disappointed. All of Shannon Work’s books are family friendly for those wondering which is an added bonus. Her stories are so good, she doesn’t need to find nonsense fillers to keep people interested & this story is no different. Love the story development & the characters she creates. Like her other stories, the reader gets to enjoy the accurate portrayal and descriptions of the setting, to include names of streets, highways, rivers, businesses, etc & in this story it was no different. For those of you familiar with Del Rio Texas & Val Verde County, you’ll enjoy the additional details of the recognition in the description of the surroundings. Go ahead & read on. I highly recommend this book. I’ve become a huge fan & you will too.
Two thumbs way up (again).
Can’t wait for the next one!
