About this listen

Molly Thomas is a feisty, independent soul, born on the Winter Solstice. At every stage of her life, she has faced troubles. As a young woman, her family are evicted from their home at Christmas. Molly swears vengeance on the jealous neighbour and land agent responsible, Flann Montgomery. Then in 1896, her baby son is taken from his pram.

While Molly searches the streets for little Oliver, the police are called but her baby is gone. Why does trouble seem to follow Molly? And will she ever find out what happened to her child?

December Girl is a tale of family bonds, love, revenge, and murder.

This story will pull on your heart-strings!

December Girl by Nicola Cassidy is a wonderfully written historical story about one woman’s struggle to survive in the late 1800s in Ireland, and later in London. It is an emotional rollercoaster as misfortune and unfortunate events follow Molly Thomas repeatedly. First, with the eviction of the family from their home at Christmas; and second, with the kidnapping of her son. Molly is a true heroine seeking justice, happiness, and yes, revenge. She has courage and determination, and never gives up. While there is heartbreak and disappointments, there is also love and courage. This story will pull on your heart-strings and have you thinking about it for days afterward!

I listened to the audiobook version of this story narrated by Emma Thorpe, who did an admirable job. Her narration flows naturally at an even pace and she uses differing voices and accents for all characters.

In summary, I highly recommend this story to anyone who enjoys listening to historical fiction stories with descriptive settings, well-developed characters, and beautiful prose.

A child gone

Molly finally finds someone who says they care about her only to have one thing after another happen to her. Only to find love with problems at that. The narrator, Emma Thorpe, gave an excellent performance.

Gripping Story

This is an example of historical fiction done right! The narrator does an amazing job of conveying not only various characters, but also the intensity of certain scenes. The story draws you in and makes you feel like you are a part of the action.
