Die Meeresbiologin Samantha Joye entdeckte im Oktober 2010 auf verschiedenen Tauchgängen großflächige Ölablagerungen auf dem Meeresboden bis in eine Entfernung von 130 Kilometern von der Bohrstelle. Der massive Einsatz des hochgiftigen Dispersionsmittels Corexit direkt am lecken Bohrloch in über 1500 Meter Tiefe hat zur Auflösung und Verteilung des Öls in tieferen Wasserschichten geführt.
