 Das Lustspiel in fünf Akten von Hugo von Hofmannsthal erschien 1956. Ein Schauspieler, Max Pallenberg, war Anlass zur Niederschrift des "Unbestechlichen".

Jaromir, der mit Anna verheiratete Sohn der Baronin, hat zwei ehemalige Geliebte zu sich eingeladen. Daraufhin kündigt Theodor, der Diener, seinen Dienst im Haus der Baronin. Er bleibt nur unter der Bedingung, dass sie ihm freie Hand lässt, das sich anbahnende "Techtelmechtel" zu verhindern, die Damen zur Abreise zu bewegen und die Ehe als Abbild des metaphysischen Prinzips gesellschaftlicher Ordnung zu retten.

Die lehrhafte Tendenz des "Unbestechlichen" sowie die handlungstragende Intrige stehen in guter Komödientradition. Die Zwiespältigkeit von Hofmannsthals Konzeption zeigt sich auch darin, dass nicht durch Theodor der Sinn der Ehe enthüllt wird, sondern dass die direkte Wirkung des Metaphysischen von Bedeutung ist (aus: Kindlers Literaturlexikon).
