Am Hof des chinesischen Kaisers sind selbst die Bäume aus Porzellan und mit goldenen Glöckchen behängt. Doch noch mehr als alle künstlichen Kostbarkeiten lieben die Chinesen, und vor allem das kleine Küchenmädchen, das Lied der unscheinbaren Nachtigall am Ufer des Meeres. Doch die Nachtigall verstummt, nachdem sie in einen Käfig gesperrt und bald durch einen mechanischen Singvogel ersetzt wird. Erst als der Kaiser dem Tod gegenübersteht, erkennt er die Bedeutung des lebendigen Vogels und die wahre Macht der Musik.
