Drie jonge vrouwen in het gewapende verzet tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog – Desnoods met wapens vertelt hun uitzonderlijke verhaal.
Vrijwel iedereen kent verzetsicoon Hannie Schaft, maar niet veel mensen weten dat ze intensief samenwerkte met twee zussen: Truus en Freddie Oversteegen. Desnoods met wapens is het verhaal van deze drie vrouwen, die tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog de wapens opnamen tegen de nazi's – zeer uitzonderlijk voor vrouwen in die tijd. Ze waren piepjong: Hannie was negentien en de zussen waren zestien en veertien toen ze actief werden in het verzet. Ze verleidden hooggeplaatste nazi-officieren, lokten hen het bos in en doodden ze. Ook brachten ze Joodse kinderen naar onderduikadressen en verzamelden ze inlichtingen voor het verzet. Ze deden dit alles 'omdat het moest gebeuren'. Maar ze probeerden vooral, onder onmenselijke omstandigheden, mens te blijven.
Hannie Schaft werd drie weken voor het einde van de oorlog geëxecuteerd en zou uitgroeien tot het symbool van vrouwelijk Nederlands verzet. Truus en Freddie Oversteegen overleefden de oorlog, maar werden hun hele leven achtervolgd door de vreselijkste herinneringen aan die tijd. Desnoods met wapens vertelt hun uitzonderlijke verhaal.
