About this listen

A secret daily account of the German Occupation of the British Channel Islands 1940 - 1945. Philip Le Sauteur (Phil) wrote this diary during the days of Jersey’s Occupation by German forces from July 1940 through to June 1945. At the outbreak of war Phil’s employer, Commander T. Pirouet, was recalled to the Royal Navy. He handed over responsibility of his builders’ merchants business, T. F. Pirouet and Son, to his employee Phil who ran it throughout the Occupation years. The builders’ merchants store soon became a meeting place for trusted friends where news was shared and discussed and entered into this diary. The author secretly recorded his observations, large and small, in the diary which was written both as a record for family and friends and to record as accurately as circumstances allowed historical events. It is unique and a valuable source of information to those interested in the German Occupation of the British Channel Islands.
