 Der Komponist Theodor wird beim Betrachten eines Bildes, welches zwei Sängerinnen zeigt, an seine eigene Jugend erinnert: Als aufstrebender Musiker ergriff er die Gelegenheit, zwei italienischen Schwestern als Begleitung zu dienen und verliebt sich in eine der beiden. Sein Talent für den Kontrapunkt läßt die Diven glänzen - besonders beim gesanglichen Höhepunkt eines Stückes, der Fermate. Seine Enttäuschung ist groß, als er merkt, daß er von beiden nur ausgenutzt wird.

Hoffmanns heiter-beschwingtes Werk trägt Züge des Bildungsromans, an dessen Ende Theodor amüsiert auf seine Jugend zurückblicken kann.
