Der Nachtwächter Kreuzgang streift nachts durch die Gassen seiner Stadt und verkündet seinen Mitbürgern die Zeit. Er bleibt den meisten Menschen unbekannt. Für ihn ist die Welt ein Irrenhaus und die Gesellschaft verrückt. Kreuzgang schaut in die beleuchteten Fenster und nimmt so am Leben seiner Mitbürger teil. Auf seinen nächtlichen Spaziergängen unterhält er sich mit Gott, dem Teufel und meist sich selbst. Dabei denkt er über das Leben, den Tod und seine Mitbürger nach.
Ein Meisterwerk der "schwarzen Romantik“. Ernst August Friedrich Klingemann (1777-1839) ist ein deutscher Schriftsteller der Romantik und ein Theaterregisseur. Sein bekanntestes Werk ist Die Nachtwachen des Bonaventura.
