About this listen

Roy Corwin, a simple man, widower, retired. A long life lived with a purpose, but don't ever call him a Dirty Old Man.

Roy loved Halloween. He treated it as the most special night of the year, next to Christmas Eve. Decorations, spooky stories, kids dressed as ghosts and goblins running from house to house collecting enough candy to satisfy any sweet tooth for a year. That's what he thought until this year.

Roy, a decorated Vietnam veteran, lives alone in his childhood home in a neighborhood where the only other occupied house belongs to a drug lord.

Two foes united by differing memories of Halloween, a visit from a lost friend. Years, of savagery in the jungles of a foreign country, struggling with the loss of his wife, and living with the stigma of a slanderous dark story from his past, have pushed him to the brink on this All Hallows Eve. Roy is taking back his self-respect.

Part Gran Torino, part Falling Down. Fun and quick

Dirty Old Man by R.A. Carter-Squire was a fun little listen. Roy Corwin is a Vietnam Vet nearing his last days. He's seen what the gangs have done to his neighborhood. So he decides he is willing to go out with a bang and hopefully get rid some of the hoodlums, including the leader Enrique, in the process. There's a lot of action going on in the present as well as some flashbacks into his past with Eric, a local police officer that is close to Roy and happens upon Roy in the midst of his trying to go out with a bang...entertaining and a bit reflective.

Michael Soma had the perfect narrator voice for this novella. I really enjoyed listening to his performance and thought he did a great job. I'd happily listen to more of his work. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher for an honest review.

Quick Listen

Dirty Old Man
: R. A. Carter-Squire

This is a quick listen that shows the protagonist in several societal situations. One old man trying to live out his life the best he can. I will look for more from this author.

The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed. Michael Soma read this well.

I found myself rooting for the protagonist

The story is both interesting and riveting, the characters are engaging and believable (the narrator did an outstanding job), and the writing is simply suberb. It is full of twists and turns and will keep you excited and guessing 'till the end.
On the negative side, there were so many potentially interesting threads that were never developed. Instead of tying the various plot lines together, the author simply lets them go up in smoke! What a cop out!

That Escalated Quickly

I suppose I should have expected it, but one gentleman’s last Halloween handing out candy this is not. I remember Halloweens in my neighborhood growing up and I thought this would bring me back to that time in my childhood. Thankfully, my childhood trick-or-treating was nothing like this book.

This is a quick read and is a great story of a neighborhood holdout taking back at least his street. It is a great tale of how the current generation forgets the battles of the previous generation and the bravery and terror they have already lived through.

The narrator did an excellent job with a voice that makes you think it is an elder veteran who is near the end of his life, but still courageous enough to stand for what he believes in.
