About this listen
Discipleship and Mentoring is one of a series of eight books in my “Biblical Leadership Essentials Series” designed to facilitate “transformational learning” for establishing a foundation in “spirit and truth” (John 4:24) that will stand the test of time and help you meet the challenges of learning how to be “lovers in a dangerous time.” (Musician Bruce Cockburn)
Discipleship involves a process of transformation that leads to becoming like Jesus. Jesus told those who questioned him about the “greatest” commandment to, “’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” (Matthew 22:37-40, NIV)
Jesus ministered to the multitudes while he invested in a few faithful followers through mentoring. J. Robert Clinton, Connecting, defines mentoring as, “a relational experience in which one person empowers another by sharing God-given resources.” (p. 38) Mentoring as a relationship-based process involves empowering for transformation in such a way that all participants come to a healthier understanding and experience of their God-given potential as individuals, members of social networks, and members of a community who serve and empower others.
Discipleship and Mentoring is an introduction to the characteristics, dynamics, and integration of discipleship and mentoring as it relates to becoming a disciple while making disciples. This book is designed to be a stand alone volume, but for those of you who want to go “deeper” in your understanding and processing of the redemptive possibilities of discipleship and disciple-making, I have developed a discovery learning workbook titled The Discipleship and Mentoring Workbook that you can purchase on Amazon.com.
