About this listen
The diwaniya, or men's gathering, is an institution unique to Kuwait. These discussion groups, which vary according to education level and social class, provide a vehicle for exchange in many areas — business, politics, gossip, and the like. But sometimes, when the evening lags, the storyteller of the group will make an offering. The narrator of the tales herein presented is Yacoub, who uses the forum to expose his political views in the guise of fable. And for the listener naive to Islam and the Middle East milieu, the anecdotes may provide an introduction to the area.
And an additional note about the white camel who appears in several of the stories: amuse yourself and try to figure out what or who the camel represents.
