About this listen

Alex Kingston reads her brand-new novel featuring River Song, from the worlds of Doctor Who.

1939, New York. Private-eye Melody Malone is hired to find a stolen ruby, the Eye of Horus. The ruby might hold the secret to the location of Cleopatra's tomb - but everyone who comes into contact with it dies.

Can Melody escape the ruby's curse?

1939, New York. River Song, author of the Melody Malone mysteries, is forced to find a reality-altering weapon, the Eye of Horus - but everyone who comes into contact with it dies. River doesn't believe in curses - but is she wrong?

From the top-security confines of Stormcage to the barbarism of first-century Egypt, River battles to find the Eye of Horus before its powers are used to transform the universe. To succeed, she must team up with a most unlikely ally - her own fictional alter ego, Melody. And together they must solve another mystery: is fiction changing into fact - or is fact changing into fiction?

Alex Kingston is my favorite Doctor Who actor and I was delighted to see this was coming out. What fun! A wiblbly-wobbly-timey-wimey mystery. Lots of twists and turns and horrible American accents that River and we have fun with and acknowledge. I really enjoyed it!

What fun!

Loved it. A tad bit confusing if you stop listening and start again, but other than that very interesting.

I loved this first writing of a River Song/Melody Malone book by the fabulous Alex Kingston.
Ms. Kingston certainly had the ,” Timey, Wimey” stuff down to it’s own unique science and I love her ability to weave multiple storylines as she brings them to the end. I look forward to more books from her and the growth we will see in storytelling sophistication.
Alex is wonderful actress and brings that skill and fun into her reading though I do feel she missed the mark with Melody’s dialogue and accent. The gangster dialogue and lovely, Alex’s lovely, soft English accent don’t mesh well as the dialogue flows past the ear.
Still, as I listened, l found I quickly arrived at a point past which I couldn’t stop listening to this entertaining story.
These characters may have been conceived by Steven Moffat; however, River and Melody live inside of and are birthed through Alex Kingston.

Funny, entertaining and well researched

If you’re a fan of River Song, and especially of her reality-melting last episodes, then I can’t think of a better treat than this story by Alex Kingston, as performed by her. It plays up in turns the 1930s pastiche that is Melody Malone, the lightness of the character of River Song, and the high stakes of powerful artifacts in the Whoniverse.

It is only in the tiniest fragments a Doctor Who story, but it completely a River Song story. Alex Kingston knows all the details a nerd could want, and brings them together in an exciting adventure.

A must for River fans

Excellent all the way around... the storyline, the narration, the incorporation of Dr Who characters. I certainly hope there are more Melody Malone mysteries coming or way!

Definitely worth it!

An amazing book read and written by an author that knows her characters inside and out. I have long enjoyed the works of both Alex Kingston and River Song (the best companion hands down, by far, forever, the end). I loved the lot of this book, the stories the wove themselves into a single creation (that mayhaps held the power to destroy all) was both interesting and entertaining.
Spoilers, just kidding, this is the best Doctor Who book I have read and I hope Ms. Kingston makes more. I knew she was an amazing actor and now I know she is an extremely talented writer as well.
