About this listen

Another entry in our range of unabriged readings of classic Doctor Who novelisations, first published by Target Books in the 1970s and 1980s.

The Green Death begins slowly. In a small Welsh mining village, a man emerges from the disused colliery covered in a green fungus. Minutes later, he is dead. UNIT, Jo Grant, and Doctor Who in tow arrive on the scene to investigate, but strangely reluctant to assist their inquiries is Dr. Stevens, director of the local refinery, Panorama Chemicals.

Are they in time to destroy the mysterious power which threatens them all before the whole village, and even the world, is wiped out by a deadly swarm of green maggots?

Katy Manning, who played Jo Grant in the original 1973 TV serial on which this book is based, reads Malcolm Hulke's complete and unabridged novelization, first published by Target Books in 1975.

Stopped listening because of annoying music

Sigh. I was really looking forward to this one. Doctor Who and the Green Death is one of my favorite Dr. Who episodes. And this audio version is read by none other than Katy Manning! Unfortunately, they ruined it. For reasons that are beyond me, they felt compelled to include very loud, dramatic music to the recording. It is REALLY annoying. I've listened to a couple of audiobooks where there's music at the start. It's irritating, but it's always gone away after a minute or so. Not in this one. The intro music lasts a little over 7 min. Once I got done with that, I thought, "finally!" But no. It keeps coming back. Any time anything interesting happens, the music chimes in loudly and obnoxiously. It's so loud and overwhelming it makes it very hard to hear Katy. I had to repeat several segments a couple of times to hear what was said. I made it 1/2 way through Chapter 2 and gave up. There's no way you can listen to this recording and enjoy the story. All you can do is listen to loud, bad, out-of-the-box, dramatic music. What a waste. I strongly encourage you not to buy this audio recording. Alas. I feel bad for poor Katy Manning who clearly did a great job with the reading. I am so sorry they destroyed your fine work.

Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.
