Questa opera fondamentale di Eliphas Levi, pubblicata in due volumi nel 1855-56 è uno studio esaustivo e notevole della teoria e pratica della cosiddetta magia, nel senso più esaustivo del termine, che, grazie alle esperienze e teoria del magnetismo, perdeva al tempo dell'autore la sua aura di superstizione e veniva illuminata dalla luce della scienza.
Dice l'autore: "Quello che in passato veniva creduto dalla fede cieca e dalla superstizione, la scienza oggi lo constata e lo spiega, e la fede cieca dell'infanzia dell'umanità e divenuta, negli uomini maturi, fede ragionata... Il nostro libro è cattolico; e se le rivelazioni che contiene sono di natura da allarmare la coscienza dei semplici, nostra consolazione è di pensare che non lo leggeranno. Noi scriviamo per gli uomini senza pregiudizi non vogliamo lusingare l'irreligione più che il fanatismo."
In altre parole: la fede religiosa si basa sui miracoli e sulla paura del diavolo e dell'inferno solo quando la ragione è bambina; nella sua maturità la fede si basa solo sull'amore e sulla constatazione dei fatti le cui cause sono supposte dall'analogia di quello che si sa. "L'uomo è lui stesso il creatore del suo cielo e del suo inferno, e non ci sono altri demoni che le nostre follie." Completa il libro, in appendice, il Nuctemeron di Apollonio di Tiana.
