About this listen

Sixteen-year-old Rachel Abramson will do anything to protect her friends and family. It’s a tall order for a Jewish girl in Nazi-occupied Denmark, but Rachel is no ordinary girl. She has the ability to erase people’s memories, making German soldiers forget her face or easing her friends’ grief over lost loved ones.

When the Danish resistance attempts to smuggle Jews to safety in neutral Sweden, her sister is forced to stay behind. Rachel delays her own escape to look after her on her own, but they are caught and deported to the Terezin ghetto in Czechoslovakia.

There, Rachel is confronted with more fear and grief than she could ever erase, and she must find a different way to protect the people she loves if they are going to make it home alive.

Engaging and fascinating story set during the holocaust

This story of a young girl with magical powers gives us a view of the holocaust from a strong female character struggling to survive at Terezin - a ghetto in Czechoslovakia. Even though we know the history of WWII, going through the journey with well written characters who evolve through their time there was a great adventure and page turner.

Don’t let the fact that this is a book set during the Holocaust turn you away. You will learn so much from this book as it is weaves historical facts into the story yet isn’t overwhelming.

Great job to Laura Hatosy for creating this story and thank you for getting it out there.

A Holocaust novel with a supernatural twist?

A Holocaust novel with a supernatural twist? Hmmm, you're thinking. Not sure. But it's GOOD. I enjoy both historical fiction and YA novels and if you're like me, this is for you. I went into it not really knowing about Denamark's occupation during WWII or about the resistance movement. I really enjoyed learning about it through this story.
The book is not only informative but also very moving. I don't want to give anything away but I really felt Rachel's pain when she realized the importance of never forgetting what happened in Terezin as well as other concentration camps.
The narrator did a great job. It's often hard to believe that the characters are teens when read by seasoned adults, but I didn't find that with the audiobook. I believed she really felt what she was reading, she wasn't just acting.
Give this book a try.
