Nadat Kate Marshall bij het surfen bijna is verdronken komt ze in het ziekenhuis terecht. Daar ontmoet ze een oudere dame die haar vertelt over haar driejarige kleinzoon Charlie. Hij raakte elf jaar geleden midden in de nacht vermist tijdens een kampeertripje. Er werd nooit een spoor van hem gevonden. Zijn verdwijning veroorzaakte bij zijn moeder een diepe depressie, die tot haar zelfmoord leidde.
Wanneer Kate hersteld is en het ziekenhuis verlaat, besluit ze om samen met haar partner Tristan de zaak te onderzoeken. Ze haalt de plaatselijke politie over om op de oorspronkelijke kampeerplek een nieuwe onderzoeksmethode te gebruiken. Een onverwachte vondst leidt tot een nieuw hoofdstuk in de verdwijningszaak.
