About this listen

The apocalypse will be televised!

You know what’s worse than breaking up with your girlfriend? Being stuck with her prize-winning show cat. And you know what’s worse than that? An alien invasion, the destruction of all man-made structures on Earth, and the systematic exploitation of all the survivors for a sadistic intergalactic game show. That’s what.

Join Coast Guard vet Carl and his ex-girlfriend’s cat, Princess Donut, as they try to survive the end of the world—or just get to the next level—in a video game–like, trap-filled fantasy dungeon. A dungeon that’s actually the set of a reality television show with countless viewers across the galaxy. Exploding goblins. Magical potions. Deadly, drug-dealing llamas. This ain’t your ordinary game show.

Welcome, Crawler. Welcome to the Dungeon. Survival is optional. Keeping the viewers entertained is not.

The story is hilarious, intense and awesome. The two main characters aren't overpowered and are in fact quite resourceful and relatable. The performance by the narrator is beyond amazing. I love the sound effects, and I love that he goes beyond Narration into, what I consider, full blown voice acting.

Please support this series so we can get the next few books into an Audible format.

Dungeon Crawler Carl, written by Matt Dinniman, is now sitting comfortably inside the list of my all-time favourite books. Those that I go back to, time and time again. This was my first listen, but I already know I'll be coming back again and again.

This was a perfect blend of dungeon crawl litRPG and bonkers humour. Fair warning - this book isn't for the easily offended. F-bombs are dropped, carpet-bombed if you will, throughout this wild ride.

Planet Earth is the unfortunate next battleground for an intergalactic TV show. If you had anything over your head, you're dead. But that still left millions of people. When the doors opened up, millions descended into the unknown.

What follows is a hilarious dungeon crawl through the first couple of levels of this world-wide dungeon. Hybrid monsters, some truly inventive and some of your more standard dungeon fare await. In this middle of it all stands Carl and his cat - Princess Donut.

Together they fight their way through batshit crazy encounters, with what seems like incredible attention to detail to the construction of this universe. This entire story flew by. Even at 13 and a half hours long, it felt like it was over too quickly. There is a massive storyline brewing here, with tantalising glimpses into what else is going on. I can't wait for the next one.

Narration by Jeff Hays was top notch. I've said in other reviews I'd definitely listen to him again, and so I have! The extra effort that's been put into producing this really brings it all together. The voice of Carl has me cracking up. A combination of what sounded like (to me) Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) from Firefly and Puddy (Patrick Warburton) from Seinfeld suited the character to the ground.

The only issue I have is that the next one isn't available yet! I am 100% certain that I'll be spending a credit on it the second it's available. Don't wait. Get this now, and thank me later.

The name seemed cheesy so that put me off at first but as soon as I gave this series a shot, I was hooked. I could not be bothered to pull my headphones out for a solid week. (yes I listened to the 5 current books in this series in a week)
The story is tight and full of detail and there is very little filler. Every detail felt like a clue but I never felt like the plot was predictable.

The voice acting is great! there's a tiny amount of sound effects that kept me more engaged but wasn't distracting.

I'd describe this as the nightmarish but hilarious lovechild of Hitch Hikers Guide and Hunger Games. It's over the top, ridiculous, fast paced and lots and lots of fun. Carl doesn't get lost in the weeds by reading bricks of stats like a lot of LitRPG series.

One disclaimer though, there is a lot of profanity. if that's something you don't enjoy, this book and series might be a bit overboard.

Overall, it's been one of the best series I've listened to in a long time and I can't get enough. as long as Matt Dinniman, Jeff Hays and the folks at Soundbooth Theater keep putting out books of this quality, I will continue to frantically shove my audible credits their way.

I ripped through all 5 current books in a week

Truly Epic.

This is generally a fun LitRPG novel that avoids quite a few tropes. The start of the book was a bit off-putting for me, as the scenario seemed beyond believable. Even for LitRPG. Yet, as background is filled in, the story begins seeming less realistic, and the entertainment of the story washed away my skeptical dislike. Quite enjoyed the narrator as well. This book is more in the tone of Dominion of Blades with more humor and very unlike Kaijou Battlefield Surgeon, which was horror based on disturbing/disgusting imagery. Looking forward to the Audible version of the next book, although I hope Sound Studios (?) goes light on the sound effects. I have heard some of their books where they have so much background going on (or they purposely distorted a voice) that it made it difficult to understand the narrator even with an equalizer set to enhance voice and diminish background.

A funny LitRPG

its addicting, def not my favorite title, but I'll be continuing the series. All to see where the shoeless Rick Grimes aka caruhhhhl, and the donut pussy will go next. Not a whole lot beats a grown man and a snooty cat kicking ass in a dungeon lol.

it's weird but good

This book is SO fun. I love Carl and Doughnut. Matt Dinniman is a master at world building. I am so glad there are more books, this is definitely just the beginning.

marvelous Plot line with lots of odd twists and turns. also like the fact that Carl was an MK. very solid rate, if I ever get the chance to ask the author what Carl's rank was when he got off active duty, I plan to.

witty with a very humourous theme
