Robert Anthony Salvatore (1959) nasce a Leominster, nel Massachusetts, da una famiglia di origini italiane. Pur essendosi appassionato alla letteratura fantasy già nel corso delle scuole superiori, è solo negli anni dell’università che, fra una laurea in Scienze delle Comunicazioni e una in Letteratura Inglese, decide di dare vita al proprio sogno di scrivere. Dopo aver iniziato a lavorare a vari manoscritti, nel 1988 esordisce con The Crystal Shard, primo volume della Trilogia delle Terre Perdute, cui si affiancheranno, negli anni, varie altre fortunate saghe, come la Trilogia degli Elfi Oscuri e la Tetralogia di Neverwinter. Ognuna di tali serie è ambientata nei Forgotten Realms, l’universo immaginario al centro del gioco Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. Salvatore ha scritto anche molti altri romanzi e racconti brevi, fra cui si segnalano i due libri ambientati nell’universo di Guerre Stellari, scritti su invito della stessa Lucasfilm.
